CHARACTERISTICS OF ATTENDING INVESTORS

Investor Allocation Size by Type

While the range of allocation sizes by investors can be large (a range between $1-$25m is common), the majority ofinvestors have an average initial allocation size between $5-$10m.

HNW individuals allocations were smallest at around $1m, and pension funds largest at $20m. Others (seeders, growth capital) indicated making large initial allocations as that is part of their business models with lower fees attached.

Investor Representation by Geography

Investors were predominantly based in the North East US corridor (roughly Boston down to Washington), with 65% of the investors being based there.

20% of the investors came from the rest of the US, with 15% being international, mainly Asian and European based investor consultants.

Investor Representation by Type:

At our cap intro events in 2010-2016 the largest share of investor representation was single and multi-family offices, constituting about 33% of the investors. Investor consultants and fund-of-funds together represented 31%, and wealth managers 12%. Pension funds and insurance companies represented together 2%, with endowments at 6%. Other kind of investors (seeders, accelerating capital, 40 Act funds, etc) represented about 6%.

Investor Size by Type

The average AUM of an allocator was $2.5bn, with pension funds being the largest with $6.0bn in average AUM (in Alternatives).

In general, most investors’ average AUM ranged between $1-3bn. HNW individuals don’t usually disclose their assets so this was not available.
